LONG AGO the poet and bioregionalist Gary Snyder said, “The most radical thing you can do is stay home,” a phrase that has itself stayed with me for the many years since I first heard it. Some or all of its meaning was present then, in the bioregional 1970s, when going back to the land and consuming less was how the task was framed. The task has only become more urgent as climate change in particular underscores that we need to consume a lot less. It’s curious, in the chaos of conversations about what we ought to do to save the world, how seldom sheer modesty comes up—living smaller, staying closer, having less—especially for us in the ranks of the privileged. Not just having a fuel-efficient car, but maybe leaving it parked and taking the bus, or living a lot closer to work in the first place, or not having a car at all. A Longboard is a skateboard with a longer and sometimes wider shape used for longboarding. They are most commonly used for cruising, downhill racing or transportation. Longboards can be shaped in various different ways, depending on the type of riding intended. Their greater weight and bulk makes them less suitable for many skateboarding tricks, but contributes to a fluid motion by providing more momentum. Longboarding is often compared to surfing on concrete, and the design allows big turns or quick short carves similar to a surfboard.

Longboarding became popular alongside emerging surfing culture through the mid 1950s. Longboarding may have originated in California where the streets gave ground to many longboarders due to the rolling hills but some believe it is a product of Hawaiian origin.

Longboard equipment is very similar to skateboard equipment. Most longboards measure between 90 and 150 cm (35-60 inches). Shorter boards may still be referred to as longboards when their main purpose is in line with that of longboarding (i.e. downhill & cruising). There are several different shapes of longboards including but not limited to: pintails, flat nose riders, and boards shaped like a longer shortboard. Pintails permit looser trucks and larger diameter wheels better suited for carving or a "surfy" feel. Mid-length boards, 81-97 cm (32-38 inches) are the most versatile. Small-length boards, 61-81 cm (24-32 inches) are "Minis" and they are the most manuvareable perfect for the groms.

holy shit man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The broadway bomb in NYC was unreal!!!!! Crazy... 230 some skaters gone wild in the city like a pack of feral dogs. There is no way i can describe it to do it justice.

It's really just you versus the streets and traffic. Everyone skating is working together. Insane energy like Spain's running of the bulls, only the bulls are yellow taxi cabs....

This Saturday the "Broadway Bomb" skateboard race will hit the streets of New York City. For those that havent heard about it, 8 miles from the upper westside of Manhattan to the Brooklyn Bridge. Broadway doesn't close for the race, so part of the challenge is working your way through the gnarly NYC traffic to make it to the finish. I've never before been part of this legendary event.. time to check it out! Ryan and I are driving up to New Jersey tomorrow to meet our friends Chris and Mike. The four of us are going to hit it up on Saturday. Hopefully we can get a few good photos and let everyone know about the broadway bomb experience...
